The Literacy Initiative
What it does
The Literacy initiative is an international literacy charity. We develop written forms (orthographies) of minority languages; teach languages to local language communities; enable communities to produce materials (like books) in their languages; and help those communities 'bridge' so they can also read and write in languages of wider communication.
Its charitable purposes
THE OBJECTS OF THE CIO (OBJECTS) ARE, FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC, TO ADVANCE EDUCATION, IN PARTICULAR, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, BY:(A) IDENTIFYING PEOPLE GROUPS WHOSE FIRST LANGUAGE EXISTS ONLY IN SPOKEN FORM;(B) DEVELOPING A WRITTEN FORM OF THAT LANGUAGE; (C) TEACHING THE WRITTEN FORM OF THAT LANGUAGE TO MEMBERS OF THE PEOPLE GROUP; AND(D) TEACHING THE WRITTEN AND SPOKEN FORMS OF ANY LANGUAGES OF WIDER COMMUNICATION USED IN THAT REGION TO MEMBERS OF THE PEOPLE GROUPWHETHER DIRECTLY OR IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OTHERS AND IN EACH CASE WITH A VIEW TO IMPROVING THE STANDARDS OF LITERACY AMONG THE PEOPLE USING THAT LANGUAGE.
